How To Make an Enviro - Friendly Deer Head Mount
After receiving this little refrigerator magnet gift that was made of a twig deer head, I pondered it for a while and decided it would look rather whimsical as a life-sized figure, and a creative and interesting way to greet guests to the lodge. The charmingly simple but goofy looking little deer head was made of simple twig construction.
Because I had recently felled a dead black locust tree located on the Bearfort property, I had many twigs and branches as waste. I soon became inspired, and using my chainsaw made quick work of cutting the pieces for my enviro-friendly deer head mount.
I used slices of smaller logs from the branches to create the eyes and the nose. By slicing smaller logs on a diagonal I was able to create the ears. A few very short cuts of small branches provided the charmingly goofy pupils.
I cut the main part of the deer head from a 2′ x 15″ log, then I cut a slight wedge in the the front to form the mouth, and trimmed it down and painted in white teeth.
I mounted the head with a large 3″ dowel that was cut from one of the branches on the log that formed the 3′ long neck.
By simply drilling a few strategically placed holes in the top head, I used some of the leftover untrimmed branches to create some equally goofy antlers.
The assembled deer head was then attached to a 2″x10″ piece of scrap wood and mounted on the gable facing down the front path, situated with care to happily greet visitors as they approach the lodge.
In the winter festive season I decorate his antlers with enviro-friendly ornaments that I create of suet, birdseed and twine.
