Most states require license applicants to take a written examination on construction law, business organization and the skills of their occupation. Nearly all states have basic requirements for applicants. We don’t list these basic requirements under state names because they’re the same or very similar in all states:

  • At least 18 years old with a high school diploma or the equivalent.
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency.
  • Documentation on any other occupational license you hold in the state.
  • Two passport-size photos.
  • Explanation of citations, violations or liens resulting from construction work.
  • Corporations doing business in any state must be registered with the Secretary of State.
  • Bidding for work on state projects usually requires prequalification.

Other issues to consider before beginning work in any community:

  • Many counties and cities require a business or occupation license.
  • The tax authority in each state has the right to set conditions for doing business in that state.
  • Many states require that licensed contractors post a "state license bond." That bond offers no protection from liability if there’s an accident or fire on the job. Construction contractors need liability and workers’ compensation coverage in each state where they do business.

ELectrical contractor license
I been in the Electrical business for 23years and i want my license in texas what should i do
We are having some work done
We are having some work done at our home due to damage wreaked by hurricane "Ike". I am assuming that would fall under the heading of remodeling? Therefore, does a remodeling contractor as well as a construction contractor in the State of Texas need to have a license in order to be legal? Thanks in advance for the assistance.
Hurricane Ike Repair/Contractor Registration
This may be a little late but if you're like us, you may have waited until after the holidays for home repair. If your damage exceeds 10K or if any structural work needs to be done then yes, the contractor is required to be licensed and registered with the TRCC himself or if he himself is not, then the subcontractors under him must have the appropriate licensure ie. electricians must be licensed, anyone doing structural work must be or must hire a structural engineer and from what I just learned, a permit must be obtained in most urban areas for any work over 10K. We made the mistake of taking our contractor's "word" that he WAS licensed/registered/insured and bonded and we found out weeks later, 10K later and a sloppy job later that he in fact is NOT so we told him that we didn't care to go any further with his services because he was not legally allowed to do the work. He has threatened to put a lien on our house so we now have that headache to deal with as if we haven't been through enough with the hurricane damage and now the contractor damage. But definitely do your due diligence when it comes to a project this big. There are a LOT of scammers out there who are incredibly smooth talkers. For anyone interested, do NOT use [name removed by admin - see reply below] or any construction company run by [name removed by admin - see reply below] (he may change his company name, he changed it during his work with us and never told us until the day before we terminated services). Very nice man, don't get me wrong, he can talk your ear off and tell you everything you want to hear but when it comes to results and answers and explanation of costs, he avoids the issue like nothing I've ever seen. He's an incredible genius at changing the subject every time a question of cost comes up. Beware...
