You are on a trip far away from home. Suddenly it occurs to you that you forgot to hide out some precious item. That thought risks spoiling all your joy of the vacation. Your calmness is gone. What if..?
If only you had provided in time the means and the system to observe and monitor your home from anywhere… You know that indoor surveillance can inform you in real time on what is going on when you are not there. If you can convince yourself that everything is as it should be, you regain your serenity and enjoy your time.
If you monitor the images, you may get advance notice of problems you may want to know as soon as possible. Or, if the system includes a recorder, you will be able to replay the images when you want.
Internet
The capability to monitor the images from a distance, thanks to the Internet, has to be built in the surveillance camera system if deemed important. This can be done in one of a few different ways, depending on individual preferences.
We strongly advocated in a previous article that one should not, under any circumstances, set up a surveillance system just to spy on the family. It is our firm conviction that no good can issue from such a proposition.
But there can be other legitimate motives, besides what remarked above, that suggest that indoor surveillance could be employed for information gathering.
Keeping an eye on Helpers
One such purpose may be keeping an eye on helpers in charge of kids or of aged people unable to take care of themselves. Some unscrupulous people may indulge in improper conduct that there may be no other way to discover.
Intruders
Another purpose may be to discover breaking in of intruders. While the damage done by their presence in an apartment empty of people cannot probably be avoided at that advanced state, extensive documentation can be collected and saved for later criminal investigation.
As usual with closed circuit TV Cameras and in general with photographic instruments, one should assure sufficient light for enabling picture taking. That varies with the type of camera (color or black and white) and the light sensitivity of its sensor, and with the illumination available for the scene.
Infrared
For enabling picture taking in complete darkness one can use infrared illuminators, either separate or embedded within the camera case.
Recording Media
To save on memory of recording media, and even more important to save on play back time, which may otherwise increase to inordinate proportions, one can establish that recording will take place only when so directed by a suitable motion detector, a device intended to trigger the recorder when needed.
In conclusion, if you agree that, when you are not there, the second best option would be to see what is happening, then you might consider exploring the installation of a simple surveillance camera system for your peace of mind. Sometimes it takes only a notice that the house is monitored to deter intruders from trying to get in.
